Oral History
Oral history is the practice of recording and preserving firsthand accounts and personal experiences of individuals, often focusing on those whose stories might not be captured in written records. It provides a rich, person perspective on historical event, cultural traditions, and community changes - insights that enhance our understanding of the past.
Oral history is crucial for capturing the diverse voices and experiences of Florida's residents. By documenting personal narratives, oral history ensures that stories of marginalized or underrepresented groups are included in historical record.
During Florida Geo Awareness Week, we offer several engaging lesson plans and activities focused on oral history. These activities aim to deepens students' appreciation for oral history, enhance their research and communication skills, and foster a sense of pride and connection to their local heritage.

Folk Art & Culture
Folk Art and culture are important to preserving the rich heritage and identity of communities around the world. They encapsulate the traditions, stories, and values passed down through generations, providing a tangible connection to the past.
Engaging with folk art and culture can foster a sense of belonging and pride, as well as promote understanding and appreciation of diverse customs and ways of life. Moreover, these cultural expressions often inspire contemporary artists and creators, bridging the gap between old and new, and ensuring that the spirit of tradition continues to thrive in modern times.
In honor of our culture, we have developed a week-long program filled with activities, worksheets, and videos! These are crafted to engage participants in the vibrant folk art that envelops them and influences their identity as residents of Florida.
