All About Our State Capital
Yesterday we learned about the importance of milestones and how it plays in a historical context. Now, we will go more in-depth on milestones that happened to Tallahassee!
Just like how landmarks and milestones on a journey show us how far we've come, the events and changes in Tallahassee have been key turning points in the development of the city, the state, and the United States.
Tallahassee is unique because it is the state capital of Florida, and this role has made it a central place for decision-making, laws, and history. Being the heart of Florida's government, Tallahassee has been the setting for major events, debates, and laws that have had a lasting impact on people’s lives. The city is where leaders come together to create rules that help shape the future of the state and beyond.
But Tallahassee’s importance goes beyond politics and laws. It is a place where important milestones in civil rights, education, and nature have happened and continue to happen. Understanding the milestones of Tallahassee helps us understand how our world has changed, and it shows us how the actions of a city can ripple out to affect a whole state and even a country.
Just like how we look at milestones along a path to see how far we’ve come, looking at Tallahassee’s milestones helps us understand where we’ve been, where we are, and where we might go next.
Bell-Ringer:
Pull out an index card and write down the following fun facts:
a. What are the important occasions your family celebrate? (Consider birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, graduations, and religious events.)
b. What community gatherings get everyone involved? (Block parties, Super Bowl gatherings, historical events, or public holidays.)
Afterward, partner up with your assigned buddy and exchange lists. Share why these occasions are meaningful to you, your family, and your neighborhoods. You can even mark the celebrations you both have in common and highlight the ones that are unique to your experiences. Finally, come together as a class to share your fun facts!
Today's Lesson
Pick up a copy of the reading “Florida’s Historic Places: Tallahassee.”
As you embark on your reading journey, use highlighters to mark important historical facts about Tallahassee. Once you've finish, start writing a concise summary on the back of your handout that reflects what you've learned about the city's early history. Then, partner up again with a classmate to discuss your highlighted points and summaries. After about five minutes, the whole class will come together to share the interesting insights they've discovered!
Let's continued by watching and discussing the video "Tallahassee" from 1960. This period was known for its vibrant culture, distinctive fashion, and evolving social dynamics, all of which are reflected in the film. After a brief introduction, ask pre-video questions that can guide you and your classmate's experience.
Now, let’s watch the film! As you observe the images and audio, write down your thoughts and reactions. Once the video is over, take a few minutes to discuss your ideas with your group. After about five minutes, come back together as a class to share what everyone has discovered!
