Florida Scrub Jay

The Florida Scrub Jay, a striking blue and grey bird found only in Florida, is the state's only endemic bird species. This unique bird resides in the scrub habitats of central Florida, characterized by sandy soils and low-growing vegetation.

The Florida Scrub Jay plays a crucial role in its ecosystem by dispersing seeds, particularly those of oak trees, which are vital for maintaining the scrub habitat. Unfortunately, habitat loss and fragmentation have led to a significant decline in their population and making conservation efforts essential.

For Florida Geo Awareness Week, we have activities and lesson plans that aim to raise awareness about the Florida Scrub Jay's importance and foster a sense of responsibility among students to protect this unique species and its habitat.
